10.030.0631 Terra Cotta Lintel Repair, Hand Pressed TC

This detail is a modern repair solution of an original detail shown in Plate 36 of Terra Cotta Standard Construction published by the National Terra Cotta Society in 1927. This detail illustrates one method of repairing a terra cotta (TC) soffit, lintel, and facade units around a window opening. The TC veneer is supported by structural steel and brick masonry backing. TC facade units are held in place with stainless steel (SS) strap & pin anchors secured to the brick backing and engaged into the sidewalls of the TC units. Lintel units are hung on a continuous SS steel rod supported by threaded J-Hooks between the units. Each J-Hook is threaded at the top through one end of a tab anchor. The tabs are secured by threaded bolts through the flange of the steel channel. The original round anchor is not replaced. The steel is coated with a corrosion inhibitor. The TC units are typically left hollow. The TC soffit units are hung by two bent SS strap & pin anchors that engage through the TC sidewalls. The holes in the sidewalls are filled with sealant around the pin. The bent strap & pin anchors are secured through the back flange of the steel channel and ancillary steel plate. The soffit is left hollow similar to the lintel.
