03.020.0217 Wall system | Stone wall, coursed ashlar w/ brick backing



This wall system illustrates a coursed ashlar wall with brick backing. The coursed ashlar varies in dimensions of 4-16” at bonding stones. The bonding stones are full depth of wall and tie that wythes of masonry together, whereas the smaller stones are considered veneer, though they are loadbearing. The lower four courses of ashlar are quarry-faced with smooth finish ashlar above. The mass of masonry deflects bulk water penetration but is understood to take on a percentage of moisture that is free to evaporate slowly from the mortar joints on either side of the wall over time. The wall is topped with a splayed copestone that prevents water penetration and has drips at either underside edge to direct water away from running down the façade.

This detail shows accommodations for a top-of-wall grout pour. Grout is poured into the top course bond beam via a grout bag or funnel through 6" x 6" holes cut into the corrugated decking every 6" on center. Midway between the pour holes are 4" dia. inspection holes to verify grout placement and flow. The concrete masonry wall is secured to the suspende slab above with angles on both sides of the wall welded to a steel plate, which is anchored to the bottom of the flutes of the decking above. The angles are secured to the masonry with self tapping screws. The top of the masonry is held back about 1 1/2" from the plate above. This detail illustrates a modern rebuild strategy for replacing existing architectural terra cotta (TC) cornice, balustrade parapet, and accessory units. The existing TC is replaced with new extruded TC units, installed not filled, with weep holes at the underside of each overhanging unit; each secured with new stainless-steel anchorage. In restoring and rebuilding these types of historic wall systems, moisture mitigation is critical to their long-term preservation and performance.
