01.410.1010 Brick orientations

This set of three diagrams illustrates the six possible orientations a brick can be positioned in a wall: Stretcher, header, rowlock, shiner (sometimes called a bull stretcher or soap), soldier, and sailor. Of the six orientations, the shiner and sailor would typically require uncored brick units.

Below grade waterproofing and an air/moisture/vapor barrier above grade provide continuous resistance to air and moisture, and continuous insulation offers excellent thermal control. The flexible thru-wall flashing is supported across the cavity with rigid insulation and grout. An optional cavity drainage insert protects the weep vents from becoming obstructed. The detail incorporates a vertical brick expansion joint and a vertical control joint at the block backing. The durable drip edge guards against moisture reentry and may be notched to avoid excessively thick laps.

02.120.0215 Grout pour at top of concrete masonry wall

This detail shows accommodations for a top-of-wall grout pour. Grout is poured into the top course bond beam via a grout bag or funnel through 6" x 6" holes cut into the corrugated decking every 6" on center. Midway between the pour holes are 4" dia. inspection holes to verify grout placement and flow. The concrete masonry wall is secured to the suspende slab above with angles on both sides of the wall welded to a steel plate, which is anchored to the bottom of the flutes of the decking above. The angles are secured to the masonry with self tapping screws. The top of the masonry is held back about 1 1/2" from the plate above. This detail illustrates a modern rebuild strategy for replacing existing architectural terra cotta (TC) cornice, balustrade parapet, and accessory units. The existing TC is replaced with new extruded TC units, installed not filled, with weep holes at the underside of each overhanging unit; each secured with new stainless-steel anchorage. In restoring and rebuilding these types of historic wall systems, moisture mitigation is critical to their long-term preservation and performance. Moisture management measures in this detail include horizontal skyward-facing joint treatment of sealant or lead T-caps, an integrated flashing system installed in the cornice, and stainless-steel through-wall flashing under the coping.
