This diagram shows a options for using bond beams in a concrete masonry wall. It presents several options for bond beam units including conventional hollow CMU notched for top or bottom bars, solid-bottom U block, and open ended block. An optional grout stop is shown to confine grout to the bond beam course, if required. The diagram also shows vertical reinforcement which must be carefully coordinated with the horizontal reinforcement of the bond beams. This detail shows accommodations for a top-of-wall grout pour. Grout is poured into the top course bond beam via a grout bag or funnel through 6" x 6" holes cut into the corrugated decking every 6" on center. Midway between the pour holes are 4" dia. inspection holes to verify grout placement and flow. The concrete masonry wall is secured to the suspende slab above with angles on both sides of the wall welded to a steel plate, which is anchored to the bottom of the flutes of the decking above. The angles are secured to the masonry with self tapping screws. The top of the masonry is held back about 1 1/2" from the plate above. This detail illustrates a modern rebuild strategy for replacing existing architectural terra cotta (TC) cornice, balustrade parapet, and accessory units. The existing TC is replaced with new extruded TC units, installed not filled, with weep holes at the underside of each overhanging unit; each secured with new stainless-steel anchorage. In restoring and rebuilding these types of historic wall systems, moisture mitigation is critical to their long-term preservation and performance.
