 04.030.0202 Dimension stone wall, interior | Wire ties and molding plaster

This detail shows 2 cm (3/4 in.) thick dimension stone anchored to an interior wall substrate with anchors of 8-gauge  (0.1285”) copper or stainless steel wire ties encapsulated by molding plaster at the perimeter of each stone panel. The wire is fitted into slightly oversized holes in edges of the stone panels, with wood plugs filling the space around the wire. The wire anchors are sized and spaced per empirical design and are fastened to the concrete masonry backing via holes cut into the block, also filled with plaster or rapid-curing cementitious material. Joints between the panels may be finished with compatible sealant and backer rod (not shown for clarity). This detail shall not be used for construction without the approval of a licensed design professional. The person using this detail shall be responsible for its complete design and proper application.

    This detail illustrates newly installed ceramic, gauged porcelain, stone, or glass tile on exsiting gypsum board backing on existing steel or wood studs using a mortar bed method. This is a retrofit application for use on interior walls in dry areas only. The tile is adhered to the existing gypsum backing over a mortar bed with metal lath embedded. A cementitious bond coat of latex modified thinset mortar is applied over the cured mortar bed. A primer or bonding agent may be required by the mortar manufacturer. For an existing steel stud framed wall to be a candidate for tile retrofit, the studs must be 20 gauge or heavier, minimum of 3 5/8 inches thick, and spaced at 16 in. on center maximum.
